The 2005 NCTAF Partners' Symposium

The annual Partners' Symposium of the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future (NCTAF) was held from July 10-12, 2005, in Denver, Colorado, at the Brown Palace Hotel. This year's meeting featured an exciting lineup of speakers and workshops (see the agenda below for more details).

Richard Riley, NCTAF co-chair, and Bob Wehling, NCTAF commissioner, opened the Symposium with a rallying call for change. NCTAF President Tom Carroll outlined NCTAF's vision and work. Other plenary speakers included Linda Darling-Hammond and Lynn Stuart, also NCTAF commissioners, as well as Kathy Klock Persing, an educational consultant who presented a discussion tool for leadership in transforming schools into 21st century learning places. (Please contact NCTAF staff if you are interested in using this tool from Microsoft with your organization!)

The workshop strands provided the 'meat' of the meeting:

  • Leadership for Strong Learning Communities
  • Knowledge- and Results-Based Teacher Compensation
  • Assessment of Teacher Preparation
  • A Bridge to Teaching via Induction
  • Technical Assistance to Manage Resources Effectively

Some of the presenters' handouts and/or powerpoint shows are available now, and the materials page will be updated continuously. A meeting summary is coming soon, should you want to share information with colleagues who were unable to attend.

Let us know if you have any questions about the meeting. NCTAF staff can be reached at 202.429.2570.

Thanks for participating in the 2005 Symposium!
